The Lavezzi islands and the cliffs of Bonifacio by boat
Bonifacio is also best seen from the sea. The cliffs, the old town perched above the void and the Lavezzi islands are only minutes from the harbour. Here is how to choose your trip.

From the harbour
The boat-trip companies line the quay at Bonifacio harbour. In July and August, book the day before; the rest of the season, the same morning is often enough.
Two trips are offered by all of them: the caves and cliffs tour, and the excursion to the Lavezzi islands.
The caves and cliffs tour
In about an hour, the boat sails along the limestone cliffs and the old town clinging to the top. You pass the King of Aragon's Staircase, carved into the rock, and the Grain de Sable, a block that broke away from the cliff.
The highlight is the Sdragonato cave: an opening in its roof is shaped like Corsica. A perfect trip with children, or for a first visit.
The Lavezzi islands
The Lavezzi are a granite archipelago between Corsica and Sardinia, protected as a nature reserve. The water is unusually clear, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
Most boats drop you on the main island and pick you up a few hours later. There you will find two small cemeteries and a monument to the wreck of the frigate La Sémillante, in 1855.
There is no shade and no facilities on the island: bring water, a picnic, a hat and a mask.
Renting your own boat
To go at your own pace, rental companies at the harbour offer boats with or without a licence. It is the best way to reach coves no road leads to.
Check the weather before you leave: the wind picks up quickly in the Strait of Bonifacio.
A day in Sardinia
On a clear day you can see Sardinia from the cliffs. A ferry links Bonifacio to Santa Teresa Gallura in about an hour: enough for a day in Italy.
Our tips
Go in the morning: the sea is often calmer and the light on the cliffs more beautiful.
If you get seasick, choose the shorter cliffs tour, and check the wind forecast the day before.
